Bishop Manogue should add AP Calculus AB for the benefit of advanced math students. Currently, students who are enrolled in AP Calculus BC have to learn the curriculum for both AB and BC before May, in sync with the College Board exam schedule. This is because Manogue does not offer AB and BC as separate courses.
Once students- normally grades sophomore and junior- have completed Honors Pre-Calculus, they have the option to take AP Calculus BC. However, many are discouraged from taking the course because it is seen as too rigorous. The course is perceived this way because students are learning AB and BC in less than a full school year, working at twice the speed of a traditional AP Calculus class. The College Board states on its website that “AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC were designed to represent year-long college courses.”
Overall, students who take AP Calculus BC at Manogue are very successful but, can achieve even higher success if they were able to take AP Calculus AB the year prior. This would allow for the course to work at a slower pace, and increase comprehension of the students.
