The Bishop Manogue Miners defeated The Reed Raiders this past Friday in the Regional Championships, leaving people on the edge of their seats until the very last second.
The Miners, after previously winning regional semifinals on November 8th, came into the game with high hopes and a strong resolve to win. Although the Raiders struck first with a touchdown early in the game, the Miners quickly set the tone with several interceptions and touchdowns that showcased their determination. Despite their willpower, the Raiders fought back, tying the game at 14-14 just before the second quarter.
As snow began to fall during the second quarter, tensions rose as the Miners missed a crucial opportunity to score once again. In spite of the mounting pressure, the Miners managed to score another touchdown, taking a narrow lead going into halftime.
In a number of heart-stopping moments in the fourth quarter, the Raiders scored two more touchdowns that left them up by one point. The Miners scrambled to make one more touchdown with only 6 minutes left. Even after an incomplete pass with only two minutes left, the Miners steadily pushed onward toward the end zone.
In an amazing turn of events, senior quarterback, Pele Masina, scored a game-winning touchdown with only a minute left. The Miners continued to keep their defense strong, preventing the Raiders from making a final push and securing the 35-28 victory.
As the clock ran out, Manogue students stormed the field in celebration. “It’s honestly been a really exhilarating game, probably the best game I’ve been to all season,” one student said, breathless from the excitement.
With this thrilling victory, the Miners’ sights are now set on the state championship, where they aim to bring home the ultimate title.
