The Student Council consists of many different positions that make their own contributions to our student council. One of these positions is the Commissioner of Rallies, who, as the title states, plays a huge role in managing – and fostering school spirit through – our periodic rallies.
Our current Commissioner of Rallies is Sierra Woida, who is a sophomore this year. She has spent a lot of time making sure that our rallies have been fun and entertaining. She is there to make sure nothing bad happens in the big gym and also makes sure that the rallies are full of school spirit – “rites of intensification,” as Mrs. Kersten would say.
According to Woida, one of the bigger parts of managing rallies is managing the logistics. While setting these events up, a lot of the details have to be approved by the admin first, and when things don’t turn out to be approved, it’s up to Woida to figure out the next best thing. “Everybody at the [previous] rally probably would have never known that while they were playing games and Hoco nominees were doing dances, we were behind the scenes dumping out a whole pool of shaving cream,” Woida recalls, laughing. “Managing logistics is about what kind of things can happen, what we can do to prevent them, and thinking on the spot for possible solutions to potential mishaps.”
Another part of the rally is the theme. Even if the rally is managed smoothly and without flaws, there still needs to be a theme to keep things new and exciting. Woida has made a lot of our rally themes based on board games, and she says she has some original and interesting ideas for our next few rallies. Expect a Safari or Glow-Out themed rally sometime soon.
While the Commissioner of Rallies might be a position with some big responsibilities, Woida believes that the wait is well worth the effort. “My favorite part of being Commissioner of Rallies is seeing the energy and excitement of students come alive, and hearing them talk about their favorite moments afterward,” she says. In other words, it’s all about the reactions of the students and their praises that make working hard to organize the rallies worth it.
Our next rally is Friday, January 24th. You won’t be disappointed!
