Students applying for the ASB Commissioner of Events position have the potential opportunity to be the ones to mold the future of Manogue’s events and festivities, following in the footsteps of senior Mariah Gunn, and junior Ava Zupon.
The Commissioner of Events position is essential when it comes to school spirit. Dances, tailgates, and spirit week games/dress up days are the main activities organized by the commissioner of events. The planning process of these events begins with a drawn up proposal of an event for ASB and admin to approve. Then, the commissioner must create a logistical plan for the event and collaborate with the rest of the student council to prepare for the event and create posters and announcements to publicize the event. Each of these steps is executed with the intent to initiate maximum student participation and make the event fun for those who attend.
Our current commissioners of events, Mariah Gunn and Ava Zupon, typically brainstorm possible themes for dances and spirit weeks before revealing their top ideas to the rest of the student council to vote on. Once student council and administration have approved the ideas, Mariah Gunn then spends time creating an instagram post to advertise the event to Manogue students. Although it is fun to come up with creative ideas, the job is not always easy: “The hardest part of being Commissioner of Events is trying to come up with fun ideas that everyone will like, while making sure everything is organized and doesn’t fall apart at the last minute,” voiced Gunn.
Organization and coordination, budgeting, communication, and time management are among the most important skills required for this position, as stated on the application form. Applicants should also be prepared to write about their experience in leadership and extracurriculars here at Manogue on the form. 2-3 applicants will be selected to proceed as candidates in the student election, following the application deadline on 1/24. Applicants for next year’s Commissioner of Events should know that the position requires participation in every school event and considerable time outside of school planning and preparing these events. However, current and past commissioners would agree that along with responsibility, the position comes with the opportunity to bring your ideas to life and shape next year’s events to be the most fun yet!
