“Who’s the sub?”
“We hope it is Mrs. Summers!”
This is what most people say when they find out that their teacher is gone.
Everyone wants Mrs. Summers as their sub. She has been a sub at Bishop Manogue for the last four years, after years of teaching elementary school. But she is a lot more than just a sub. She has an amazing background that lead her to where she is today.
Mrs. Summers grew up in Miami Florida. She loved living there. She lived there from elementary school to highschool. She liked being able to go to the beach all of the time. Her and her friends would always go to the beach. They loved to go surfing and snorkeling. Their favorite place to go was to Key Largo. They would swim with sea turtles, and dolphins all the time. She also enjoyed finding shells on the beach. She had a lot of fun in Florida, and she loved living there.
Mrs. Summers had an older sister, who sadly passed away several years ago, from breast cancer. Her sister was 3 years older than her. Their birthdays were 3 days apart. They were close, and she said “I really miss her, she was my older sister.”
She also has one son named Tim, who has five kids, Mrs. Summers grandkids, a set of twins that just turned eight, another one six, and the other ones one and three. She loves them all and is so proud of all them.
Mrs. Summers has had a lot of jobs throughout her life. She first worked as a candy striper. Then she also worked as a nursing assistant when she was in high school, and she really enjoyed it. She also worked at a waterpark, and she made cotton candy all day long. She said when she would get off work all she could smell was cotton candy, and she always smelled like cotton candy. When she started college, she wanted to major in nursing. She ended up changing it to teaching. I think that was a great idea, because she now has a job she loves.
She started teaching in preschool, and she really loved that. She then started teaching kindergarten, and she really enjoyed that, and she did that for a long time. After that she slowly just started moving up, and she taught preschool to fifth grade. She said her favorite grade was kindergarten and preschool. She also liked teaching fifth grade because she said “I liked fifth grade cause I got to teach American History.” She said that she has practically been a teacher for her whole life. She said that she truly believes that teaching was her vocation, that God gave her.
Something Mrs. Summers strongly believes in is God. She said “God is my rock, my savior, and my redeemer. I can’t go anywhere, or do anything without Him.” She goes to mass every Sunday, and has a very strong relationship with God. She is an amazing role model for people who want to have a life of faith. Mrs. Summers makes time for her faith no matter what she is doing, or where she is in life. God is the center of her life, like he should be in all of our lives.
She says that her biggest accomplishment in life is being a mom and being a grandmother. “I think that is where my heart is.” She loves knowing that she created the man her son has become, and wants the same for her grandchildren. She is an inspiration to many people.
When asked what she enjoyed doing most, Mrs. Summers said, “ I love being here at Manogue and teaching all of you , and being able to share my love of Christ.” She also loves going to mass, and adoration. She loves to do service work with Catholic charites. She loves hiking with her two golden labradoodles, named Kona and Joy. She likes walking along the Truckee river, and on the beach in Tahoe.
She said her favorite part of Manogue is seeing the students everyday, seeing what they are doing, and how she can support them. She decided to come to Manogue after Covid, because she still wanted to be able to teach. She wanted a different venue from elementary school, and she didn’t wanna go to public school, she believes that her coming to Manogue was a calling that Christ gave her later in her life. As soon as she started subbing at Manogue, she fell in love with everybody, the staff, the students, the support, and the whole atmosphere. She says Mrs. Cope helped her a lot with all of the things on the computer. Mr. Charboneau, and Mrs. Leblanc helped her a lot when she was a long term sub for Mrs Meschner. She said, “ I just love coming to Manogue and Teaching here.”
