Over 150,000 people showed up to Rancho San Rafael Regional Park September 5-7 for the annual Great Reno Balloon Race. From Smokey the Bear to Chase from Paw Patrol, there were many unique spectacles that soared above Reno.
The event began with gates opening at 3:30 a.m. for spectators. Once people settled in, the Glow Show began at 5:00 where select balloons were lit as music played while it was still dark. At 5:30, Dawn Patrol followed, where a handful of balloons are lifted before the sun rises. At 6:45, the National Anthem is performed by a new performer for every day. The mass ascension of nearly 100 balloons followed at 7:00, creating a beautiful scene over the Biggest Little City.
The Great Reno Balloon Race has been around since 1982, originally purposed for keeping visitors in town between the State Fair and the Reno Air Races. Now, 43 years later, it is a community tradition cherished by many. Local Sydney Henning says “I think it’s so special because it’s something unique to Reno, and I love how it brings us together.” In conclusion, the event was a hit, and will be looked forward to next year.
