The Bishop Manogue Miners varsity football team went on the road to take on the Galena Grizzlies on Friday, September 26th, in their first league game of the season. The Miners showed superiority over the Grizzlies, defeating them 41-9.
The student section was full as the ball was kicked off to start the game. It started off hot for the Miners, forcing a three-and-out early from the grizzlies, turning into 7 points for the miners. The momentum shifted fully when corner, Joey Thomas, scored a pick-six to give the miners a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. From there, the miners dominated the first half with a halftime score of 35-3, never looking back. This developed into a game that the second string will never forget, head coach Ernie Howren allowed the second team to finish the game out in the 4th quarter. This allowed for them to show what they had learned from their teammates in front of them, especially Junior linebacker Courtland Morency racking up his first sack of the season. With backups in, the miners ended the game with 5 offensive touchdowns with 326 total offensive yards.
After sending the Grizzlies back to the drawing board, the miners are on a 2-game winning streak. Now looking forward to hosting their second league game on October 3rd at home against Douglas. Offensive lineman and long snapper, Kaedyn Stephan, says that “We can’t keep trying to prove ourselves to the north. We have the talent and respect already; we can’t keep thinking we aren’t the hunted in the league.” The talent has to be shown for the miners as the tigers are also coming off a dominant win, beating Damonte Ranch 42-19. Both with momentum, both with ambitions for a 3rd win in a row.
