The Bishop Manogue Speech and Debate team approaches the final few weeks of their season. After having a tournament every month since September, the Miners only have 2 left. For seniors on the team it is particularly sad, as a prominent part of their high school experience is coming to an end.
The next tournament is a particularly fun one, as students have the opportunity to spend two nights away at Elko high school to compete. It is a weekend filled with positive memories with teammates and friendly competition with other schools. One Manogue debater stated “The Elko trip is always such a highlight for me each year. I don’t really love driving for 4 hours, but once we get there it is the best time!” After the Elko tournament, debaters have the opportunity to compete for a spot at the National Speech and Debate tournament. Last year, Bishop Manogue sent 2 debaters to Des Moines Iowa to compete with students from across the country at nationals.
Aside from close friendships made, joining Speech and Debate is useful in so many different ways. Not only is it a great way to build good public speaking skills, but it is an awesome way to get involved in the school community and meet students from other grades. For students who are more on the shy side, it is a great way to get out of your shell.
While it is sad that this season is coming to an end, next season will be in full swing in the blink of an eye. Any students interested in joining the Speech and Debate team for the 2026-2027 season should contact Ms. McCarthy at teresa.mccarthy@bishopmanogue.org.
