The Girls Varsity Basketball team wrapped up their season on February 11 with an unfortunate loss against Reno High 41-61. Leading up to this game, the girls had a 12 game winning streak. In this final game, the Miners dominated the first quarter 16-12. After that, the Huskies began to take the lead the rest of the game, resulting in their win. While this wasn’t the ending Manogue had hoped for, the intense game’s final score doesn’t fully capture what this season really meant for the team.
This group of girls showed what it really means to be a team. Wins and losses came and went, but their energy, effort, and commitment to each other never changed. One of the most noticeable things about this team was their sportsmanship. They respected their opponents, learned from their coaches, and represented Manogue with class. No matter the outcome of a game, they walked off the court knowing they had given it their all. For the players, what they’ll remember most isn’t the final score, it’s each other.
When asked about their favorite thing about the team, Sophomore Josie Williamson shared “I love the team’s ability to have fun while putting in the work.” Senior Kayla Miramontes adds to this sentiment, saying “This team truly embodies what real support looks like through constant encouragement, kindness, and motivation every single day.” This group of athletes consists of girls going through many different experiences. Senior Julianna Evans acknowledges this, expressing “I really enjoyed how our team had a variety of different ages but we were able to get together and make this season so fun and memorable.”
The season may have ended on February 12, but the culture this incredible group of young women built doesn’t disappear with the final buzzer. What they built this year will be cherished for many years to come.
