The Creator released on September 29th, 2023 costing 80 million USD to produce and earning around $97.3 million worldwide. Directed by Gareth Edwards, who directed Rouge One, The Creator was made to be a sci-fi action movie based around the concept of artificial intelligence going to war with humanity. The Creator’s worldbuilding is heavily inspired by the cyberpunk genre, with many modern objects and structures looking familiar, but influenced by advanced technology. Gareth Edwards’s experience with Rouge One clearly shows through in the action sequences, where high quality effects and cinematography can be clearly seen. The explosions in the movie are very realistic, where the shockwaves produced from them change in scale depending on the size of the explosion.
The Creator’s writing is debatable, as critics have said that the cinematography and worldbuilding overwhelms the story itself. The story revolving around AI is topical today, with AI beginning to be used in many parts of our lives. Many people are concerned about the extent of artificial intelligence and what it could do to us and for us. Stephen Hawking himself said that AI will “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity” a year before he passed away. This movie takes that a step further by showing us the consequences of giving great power to AI.
Overall, I would say that The Creator is a topical movie with extensive worldbuilding and cinematography, but a story that was lacking in depth to many people. Modern movies and entertainment has gone somewhat stale over the last years, with many stories being retold with different environments, or have not innovated at all. Large studios like Disney have gained the critique of many people in the recent years. Seeing a new innovation like The Creator was a breath of fresh air, but it sadly could not create a story to match it’s visuals.
