On August 11th of 2023 the rap Group $uicideBoy$ dropped the surprise EP I No longer Fear The Razor Guarding My Heel (V). This album is a new approach from the boys that is more than welcome from their fans. This EP contains three songs, “Not Even Ghosts Are This Empty,” “Finding Shelter In My Larynx,” and “A Little Trauma Can Be Illuminating,” “And I’m Shining Like The Sun.” Each of these songs offer a new look into the message of the group that has been prevalent since their first EP in 2014. The members of $uicideBoy$ “Ruby da cherry” and “$crim” have struggled with addiction, family problems, and so more, but by using music they created an outlet for their problems that not only help them escape but provide solace for others suffering from the same situations.
The first track on the EP is “Not Even Ghosts Are This Empty.” It opens with a monologue from the 2004 movie Troy That addresses the idea of our mortality and how it’s such a fragile thing and yet it’s the most pure thing about being human. This is a gift that the guys have come to realize and appreciate more and more as time goes on. As listeners we are slowly watching them better themselves and address the problems they deal with. The song addresses their need to have a deeper bond with those around them, that doesn’t revolve around drugs or money. With it ending with another monologue discussing the meaning of hell, breaking down the worsts parts of hell not being the flames or the torture but the hopelessness of not finding salvation. This song is very reminiscent of the opening song off the 2022 album Sing Me A Lullaby, My Sweet Temptation following the same format with the monologue and somewhat upbeat rhythm that breathes new life into their somber sound.
The following song is “Finding Shelter In My Larynx.” This song jumps straight into the mantra of the EP about not getting enough love. The guys are constantly looking for ways to feel love but since they haven’t felt it before they don’t know where to look. This is something I feel a lot of people can relate to. It’s easy to feel alone and as if no one cares but that is never the case. The guys help each other and their listeners feel heard, saving everyone who listens.
The final release off their newest EP is “A Little Trauma Can Be Illuminating, And I’m Shining Like The Sun.” This addresses the idea of a silver lining in someone’s life and how it can be hard to find one. No matter the struggle there is always something to look forward to and I think that’s something people don’t really remember. They’re saying don’t subject yourself to pain because you never deserve it.
This EP is definitely a turning point for the guys, I feel that this is a step in a new direction for their music and myself and many others can’t wait to hear what’s next.
