Cancel Culture is a very commonly used practice, which I believe is a key practice in our society today. Cancel culture is when a public figure, from TikTok to Instagram, to even Snapchat, is “canceled” for something he or she did. These types of situations done by public figures tend to be offensive or objectionable. Some people may object to the fact that cancel culture is not good for our society, and can hurt people. However, I would like to disagree with this statement. If you decide to choose a job that puts you in a public eye, you are automatically influencing others, so therefore you have to be a good role model no matter what.
Public figures, or influencers, have a tendency to make bad decisions and overall have bad morals. Cancel culture is what sheds light on those types of people, people who should not have a public following, people who should not be able to influence others through social media, television, and more. Cancel Culture makes influencers accountable for their harmful actions. It also allows individuals to reflect on what they have done, and show a shift or change in their morals in a much more public way. Cancel Culture is public opinion, and can be very educational. One example of cancel culture is when Kanye was canceled for posting an image of a swastika in a David star. This action was extremely sensitive and something Kanye should have been and was held accountable for. Another example of cancel culture taking its course in bettering society and social media is Morgan Wallen. Although being a very famous country singer, he was canceled for using a derogatory term towards African Americans. This was immensely offensive and an action he was held accountable for and canceled for, which was extremely deserved. Many users of social media are made up of younger generations. Cancel culture can inform younger generations about discrimination and the impact your words and actions can have on other individuals.
