While many people call for a full reform of the education system today, I think that there are some things that the current system does well. For example, AP classes off their ability to enhance the students knowledge and ability to enter the college they want. On the other hand, reforming the use of homework in high school for non AP and Honors classes would be beneficial, as most students in high school have sports or a job to go to after school. For the most part, the school system has stayed the same since the industrial revolution.
The industrial revolution and its consequences caused many things to change. Our society became more focused on production of products supplemented by agriculture, and new workers needed to be educated. School helped teach its students how to complete the task given to them, which was perfect for when they worked in factories or companies to develop new things. This is where the difference between college and grade schools differ. Where all the school before college was meant to train us to complete tasks and gain a basic knowledge, college is where we would actually gain the knowledge to form our own career path.
The system that the industrial revolution brought on is mostly outdated, but giving the students basic education should remain. This is because a large number of students will not complete school nor go to college after high school. I think that the current school system is flawed and needs to be rebuilt, but it also has some redeeming qualities.
