Mean Girls is being adapted into a musical film and will be premiering January 12th, 20 years after the first movie appeared in theaters. The original movie has been a staple of pop culture, labelled by Rolling Stone as the 20th greatest comedy of the 21st century. It’s been well renowned as a “chick flick” and follows Cady Heron as she tries to find her way through the cliques of high school.
Tina Fey wrote the original Mean Girls film and starred in it as the math teacher who brings the girls in the school together. She also wrote the Broadway musical version and the upcoming movie while also starring in it as her original character. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are the only two actors from the original cast who are returning to their roles. Other characters in the film have been replaced such as Regina George’s role being played by Reneé Rapp and Cady Heron’s role being played by Angourie Rice.
“I’m going to watch it, but the musical part seems cheesy. I like that Tina Fey’s in it though,” says Wendy Cook, senior. Many fans of the original movie have a sense of nostalgia for it and are excited to see a new version of the movie that is more modern and depicts our current world. Other fans are curious to see if the movie will live up to their expectations and the glory of the original film.
