Bishop Manogue, as well as the school in the Reno/Sparks area, closed down last Thursday due to the aftermath of heavy snow storms the night before.
The effects were so disastrous that Manogue ended up having another virtual day where students had to learn from home, whereas the Washoe County School district called for a 2-hour delay instead.
This is the first snow day that students have had this school year. It has not snowed almost at all in the past months, which is very unusual for Reno’s high-altitude weather. Wednesday night’s blizzard caused the roads to be incredibly dangerous. Drivers wouldn’t be able to see 10 feet in front of them, and the freeway was packed due to the accidents that were caused because of vehicles slipping on black ice. During these days, it was highly encouraged by the National Weather Service to delay any form of travel during these two days. According to the National Weather Service, “Travel could be very difficult to impossible.”
Concerning the future of snow days at Bishop Manogue, it seems that classes will go on as per usual for the week of 1/16 to 1/19, due to the snow and ice melting away. According to the weather forecast, no sort of snow seems to be happening in the coming week. In fact, the forecast predicts that this week temperatures will reach 50°F, which is high for winter. But as most people from Reno know, the weather here is very unpredictable. Stay safe and stay warm Miners.
