Tryouts were held this past weekend at Bishop Manogue that finalized both the JV and Varsity baseball lineups for the upcoming season.
Players were evaluated based on both their performance in the tryout scrimmages and in the pre-season practices and activities overall. The actual tryouts consisted of two scrimmages where each player was given an opportunity to play their main field position and bat at least once. Coaches considered each player’s performance during this exercise and how they have been playing during the preliminary practices that have been occurring since early January. With all this information, the coaches decided to make no cuts to end up with 26 people on the JV team. Nolan Yount, a player on both the JV and Varsity teams expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, “I am excited to start the season, and I am feeling good about our chances of making it to state again this year.”
The annual baseball poker tournament fundraiser was also held this weekend to raise money for the entire baseball program to further prepare for the season. The Varsity team will start competing as an official team in a tournament in Las Vegas starting next Thursday. Regular season games for both JV and Varsity are still expected to begin in early March with off-season summer baseball games set to start in late May as well. It is going to be a great season for Miner baseball so go out and show your support for the JV and Varsity teams!
