On February 5th, 2024, Manogue had once again closed down due to a strong, hazardous blizzard from the night before that had frozen the roads, making them unsafe for students or parents to drive on.
Compared to the last snow storm, however, this one wasn’t as strong and only lasted for one day before it all melted away, whereas the last one (January 11-12) had students stay home for two days.
This was only the third snow day of the school year, showing that this winter has been relatively dry, with barely any precipitation coming in. Even though it ends up raining in later weeks, it’s strange how Nevada still hasn’t received much snow this winter, because it seems like most of it is hitting California. As it’s stated by WeatherNationTV, “It hasn’t just been rainfall, we’ve seen multiple feet of snow in the last few days. Bear Valley picked up 31″ of snow from Tuesday into Wednesday with Mammoth picking up a fresh 2 feet of snowfall. The snow created issues on I-80 and HWY 50 along with many mountain roadways.”
The school’s cancellation seemed unnecessary, seeing as the next morning was very sunny and it had melted all the snow away. With this, it would’ve been more appropriate to have a 2-hour delay rather than a virtual learning day. Still, it was surely appreciated by students to get a break and stay at home.
As 2024 slowly approaches Spring, it is unlikely that Reno will receive any precipitation other than rain. Future forecasts predict that there will be a 30% chance of rain for next week, and other than that it will be cloudy. The one thing that you can count on is that it will be freezing, with the highest being 57 degrees Fahrenheit, so stay warm Miners!
