Taylor Swift, now a billionaire from her Eras Tour, has just released a new, two part, thirty song album: The Tortured Poet’s Department, or TTPD for short.
However, I don’t think it’s her best work.
I know that Taylor Swift fans love almost all of what she puts out, and I am also a fan of her older albums, but I’m just not a fan of this new one. From strange lyrics to the two-part release, I’m just not sure I can really be a fan of what she’s done with this new album.
Aside from the lyrics and overall melodies from the songs, I want to focus on the two-part release, and how many songs are in TTPD. With thirty-one songs, this is one of the longest albums I’ve ever listened to. The run time is about two hours, which isn’t terribly long, but still seems excessive. The two-part release also rubs me the wrong way. It seems like an attention or cash grab, which brings me to the melodies of her songs.
Whenever I hear her songs from this album, one after the other, they seem just a little too similar. Not the lyrics, or the content of the songs, but the melodies are very similar. I can’t even tell when one song ends and the other begins. While this could be an intentional choice, it’s just not something that I’m personally a fan of. The music I usually listen to has a lot of variation- and I think, as a stylistic choice, it’s just not something I’m used to.
Finally, I’ve been reading over some of TTPD’s lyrics- and they seem very odd. In the song ‘Florida!!!’ Taylor sings, “All my friends smell like weed, or little babies”. When I first read that, I was just confused. What? While many people are calling it genius because they know that Millennials have delayed growing up, I find that line incredibly strange. I understand what Taylor is trying to convey- facing that you have to grow up in your thirties is probably pretty difficult. But why would she say that in this way? It’s just a very odd choice of lyrics, and it’s one of the things that’s really turning me away from liking this album.
All in all, this is just my opinion. If you like TTPD, that’s great! I just personally don’t, and I will be sticking to my 1989 and Fearless tracks.
