Over 100 Bishop Manogue families were displaced by the fire that broke out at the Davis Creek regional park on September 7th. The fire is now only 76% contained and has burned almost 6000 acres already, so residents are encouraged to remain vigilant.
Thousands of people who were located near the fire were forced to evacuate their homes, which was spread along the west side of Reno to McCarran Boulevard. Many Bishop Manogue students and families were impacted by the Davis fire. Some were forced to evacuate their homes and stay with friends or in a hotel. Even those who were not evacuated were plagued with power outages either lasting from a few hours to days. During evacuation, many had to either leave behind their beloved pets or bring them as they left their homes.
Many schools located in the Washoe County School District, including Bishop Manogue had to shut their doors last week, delaying homework, quizzes, and tests by a week.
“The district continues to collaborate with public safety officials to monitor the Davis Fire and determine the safest plan for our students and staff members,” said school officials to local families.
Some of the Bishop Manogue students were unable to attend in person learning due to displacement or road closures, while others were unable to attend in person and virtual school because computers and wifi weren’t available.
Over 700 firefighters fought to put out the Davis fire. Even the National Guard helped control the spread of the fire. Some have speculated that the fire might have started due to a campfire that hadn’t been extinguished. However, the Davis Fire’s source is still being investigated by authorities.
The Bishop Manogue community, and many other organizations, have set up fundraisers and drives to support the firefighters and first responders who have put their lives at risk. Students have also been called to bring in supplies for families in the area throughout the week to aid those impacted by the fire. Hopeful wishes are sent to all those affected by the Davis fire. Stay safe Miners!
