Varsity Volleyball won their third match of the week last night in a thrilling 4-set conference match against McQueen. The Miner ladies trailed several times throughout the night, but dug deep at key moments to recover.
The first set nearly went to the Lancers, but a succession of kills from both Lily Beckwith, sophomore, and Audrey Sutherland, freshman, lead the Miners to a 27-25 upset. Beckwith led the team with an astonishing 22 kills (5.5 kills per set) and 11 digs, looking unstoppable on both offense and defense.
The Miners sailed through the second set 25-20, but it was the third set that tested their endurance, as both teams struggled to close out the game, with Manogue committing several service errors, and McQueen unable to keep the ball in play. An unforced error eventually gave the Lancers the win, 32-30.
Manogue trailed again at the beginning of the fourth set, but thanks to some great digs by Eva Knudsen, sophomore, and Pamela Jonovic, senior, and key aces from team captain Kaetlie Harris, junior, the lady Miners cruised to a 25-21 win. Harris ended the night with 16 kills, while Audrey Sutherland, the 6’4” freshman phenom, and Crystal Pautler, senior, both had 11. Lily Beckwith was named the Player of the Match.
Varsity is now 17-8 heading into the home stretch of the season, and they’ll look to continue their win streak after Fall Break against Spanish Springs, Tuesday, October 15th.
