The Bishop Manogue Varsity Football team cruised to a 48-26 victory over the Reno Huskies at Manogue’s final home game on October 18, 2024. After a somewhat slow start, the Miners finally got a touchdown late in the first quarter, setting a victory that the Huskies could never surpass.
Temperatures were starting to dip to around 40 degrees Fahrenheit when the game first started. As those in the stands shivered or covered themselves in blankets – heck, even number 31 was dancing on the sidelines – the two teams fought one another for the first touchdown; it was 0-0 for quite a long time until wide receiver Amir McGruder made his way to the end zone, putting the score at 7-0 to end the first quarter.
Reno High got a touchdown to kick off the second quarter, but it would be their last one for a long time – with an astounding rush from the quarterback, Manogue kicked off a string of touchdowns (and an interception) that carried through halftime and got the score to 41-6 around the middle of the third quarter.
And then, something quite unusual happened. People turned their heads towards the parking lot as multiple ambulances and a fire truck made their way towards the gate. According to William Alden, a freshman, somebody fainted and got a concussion.
“I was right next to her when it happened,” he reported.
As the ambulances slowly peeled away, the attention turned back to the game we all came to watch, and the Miners held their ground for the rest of the third quarter.
With the victory all but secured, the Miners were able to relax a little, even as the Huskies made a late charge and racked up 20 points in the final quarter. Unfortunately for them, the game still wasn’t even close, and the end score wound up being 48-26. Overall, the game showed all of the Miners’ hard work they have been putting in this season, and it paid off.
When asked how he felt about the team’s performance, running-back Pele Masina, who had a touchdown of his own, said, “I feel great, the offense and defense were clicking on both sides of the ball. The energy and the emotions that we were playing with went unmatched.” He added that he is excited for the playoffs and can’t wait to showcase the skills that he and the rest of the football team have been cultivating.
Manogue’s record is now 6-3, having won the last four games. They’ll be looking to make it five at their next and final game against Douglas.
