The Bishop Manogue girls’ volleyball team beat the Reno Huskies in a nail-biting five-set game to win the regional title this past Saturday!
The Lady Miners took an early lead with a 25-22 victory in the first set, but lost the second set 23-25. After a series of brutal spikes from sophomore Lily Beckwith, they won the third set 25-23. The fourth set was marked by a loss in momentum towards the end and a Reno victory of 18-25, leaving the game tied with two sets per team.
The final set culminated in a fight to a deuce (a victory by two points) for Manogue. A final serve from senior Pamela Jonovic and a tense volley by the team clinched the win and a regional title for the team. She later reflected on her team’s victory, saying, “Winning regionals was a really big goal of mine all season and achieving that makes me beyond joyful. I am so grateful for my amazing teammates and coaches for helping me along the way and making it such a fun and fulfilling season.”
As competitive as it was on the field, there was just as much tension in the stands, as Manogue students tried to cheer louder than Reno’s student section. Gia Brunetti recalls the atmosphere in the stands: “I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It felt like we had to compete with the Reno student section because the tension was so high.” When Manogue won, the joy was palpable as the students stormed the court to celebrate with the team.
The women’s volleyball team will compete in the state semifinals this Friday at 5 PM at Spanish Springs against Coronado. Make sure to show up to cheer them on, Miners!
