The Bishop Manogue Girls Varsity Soccer team saw it’s season come to an end with a hard-fought loss to Reno High in the semi-final round, Reno winning 1-0.
When the final whistle blew it marked the end of a successful season, the tears that ran down the girls faces was not only about the number on the scoreboard. For most of the team, the emotions came from knowing it was the last time this group of girls would play on the same field together. The team had developed a very strong bond throughout the season, growing together through tough practices, difficult games, and countless memories. Many players reflected on the fact that their senior teammates would no longer be by their side next season.
In the first 5 minutes of the game Reno scored off of a cross-in with one of their outside forwards open, which left an opening. After that Manogue was determined not to let anything get past their defensive line. It was not the energy on the bench that was a problem, nor the communication on the field. Instead, it was finding the right passes and letting the ball do the work. In the last ten minutes of the game it was Manogue’s chance to score. While Reno was getting tired and moving slower, the ball was on their half most of the time. Manogue was not able to finish their attacks with a goal, resulting in a loss.
The bond among the players was built through months of hard work and perseverance. Assistant Coach CJ often challenged the girls during conditioning, encouraging them to push through with the words that became a team motto: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.”
When practices became difficult and players questioned how much they could give, Coach CJ was the one who reminded them, “This is what separates good from great.”
Although the results were not in Manogue’s favor, the team’s effort and determination reflected the mentality they developed through the year.
As the 9 seniors move on with the next chapter of life, they leave behind a legacy of commitment, leadership, and friendship. Even though their win was taken away by Reno, their memories will always stay. The bonds formed between teammates will last a lifetime. All the tears after the match were not just for a season ending, but for a family saying goodbye.
