Bishop Manogue has many opportunities across the campus that students can take advantage of to help broaden and strengthen their chances to achieve not only in Highschool but for what’s beyond the halls of Manogue. One of the opportunities that are given to students that have some of the most abundant resources is our College Counselor Jessica Burke.
Mrs. Burke has been working with students over the past couple years as a branch in the cutthroat world of college applications. She guides incoming college freshmen on the steps they need to take to get into the college of their dreams. Whether that’s through writing letters of wreck, holding common app workshops, or getting in touch with recruiters. Mrs. Burke is taking the steps to make sure you have all the tools and information to succeed.
A little background on Mrs. Burke. Reno local, first generation college student from sparks. She sees how important college is for the growth of a student so she took the steps not only through classes at UNR but with personal experiences to guide her students on college acceptance. Not only does she take care of students at Manogue but she also a mentor for the NPS (Nevada Promise Scholarship), a program that has Mrs. Burke mentors current TMCC students and guides them towards achievements and goals.
Even with all the work she’s putting in with the NPS and the Seniors at Bishop Manogue she still finds the time to spend time with her family and keep up with her hobbies. Whether it be networking with the moms in her kid circle or Admission deans for the top universities Mrs. Burke shows a level of focus that doesn’t go unnoticed by those around her. Recently even being nominated for the Reno Tahoe’s Young Professionals award given to those making a great difference in the lives of students in Nevada. She is one of 40 left and counting, if anyone deserved this award it would be Mrs. Burke.
Another thing Mrs. Burke is passionate about social media and the effects it has on the mental health of new mothers and women in general. Mrs. Burke said,” you get wrapped up in being a perfect mom… And there’s standards that I feel like women put on themselves and a lot of pressure that they put on themselves.” Mrs. Burke understands all the trials and tribulations social media puts on people. It can get easy to be wrapped up in all of these negative thoughts but what social media shows isn’t always the truth. Mrs. Burke accounts success as a mother by these three simple things,” if you are feeding your kid, if they’re healthy and happy, you’re killing it.” There doesn’t always need to be these flashy displays of wealth or the matching PJS on sundays. As long as those in your family and the people in your life are content you’re killing it. Mental health is a big part of life with not only family situations but even with school and college work so having someone who understands is very beneficial for students to accomplish the most in their four years at Bishop Manogue and even once they leave.
Mrs. Burke offers a resource that not many Highschool students can get. The job she’s doing is personal to her and it shows. The love she has for the college process and getting kids to where they want to go is admirable and captivating. She can answer any question to the best of her knowledge and when she doesn’t know something she is quick to put you into contact with someone who can answer it. Then with her connections to the UNR admissions office, Students at Bishop Manogue often get access to Q&A sessions with admission directors at the D1 school free of charge. This is just one example of the many others listed above as to why Mrs. Burke is an asset to the Bishop Manogue lineup. Though making a complex and confusing process mainstream, Mrs. Burke understands the fundamentals of College recruiting. Propelling Manogue students in front of the rest of the applicants applying for these universities and scholarships.
Now Incoming Manogue seniors! Do not hesitate to go into the counseling office if there are any questions you have about any website or college application. Mrs. Burke will spearhead it and get back to you in a matter of seconds. College admissions doesn’t have to be a solo venture, it’s always ok to reach out for help. Just send Mrs. Burke an email!
