Students interested in engineering and aviation have a new opportunity to pursue those interests through the new Aerospace Club. Meetings are not being held yet, but the club will meet in Doc. G’s room during Miner Block. Students would get the chance to design, build, test, and present projects related to aerospace engineering.
The Aerospace Club is focused on helping students become more creative and develop useful engineering skills. Members will learn more about physics, aerodynamics, and engineering design and combine those ideas to build real world projects. They will also have to practice teamwork and collaboration as they work together on different projects.
“We build things that fly,” said club president Sebastian Simms, sophomore, efficiently describing what to expect from the club.
One of the club’s biggest purposes is to introduce students to tools and skills useful to engineers. These include things such as 3D modeling, programming, and electrical work such as wiring. Learning these skills can give students real world experience with several different areas of engineering.
An important aspect of the club will be group projects. Members will design rockets, airplanes, drones, and gliders before testing their builds to see how well they work. They can present their designs, explain their Ideas, and discuss what they learned during the building and testing process.
In addition to group projects, members will be able to give individual presentations about aerospace topics. Students can research a topic that interests them, such as V-wing jets, and present what they learn to the club. These presentations will help them improve their skills of research and public speaking.
The Aerospace Club also hopes to participate in competitions such as the American Rocketry Challenge, Aerial Drone Competition, Tripoli Rocketry events, and National Association of Rocketry competitions.
