After a crushing loss to Douglas, the Bishop Manogue varsity girls Tennis team defeated Hug in on Tuesday.
During the Hug games all of the doubles players won their matches and all of the singles players won their matches except 2. Each doubles team worked together and won 3/3 of their matches. With the smashing volleys and elegant ground strokes these games went well. Most of the singles players won 3/3 of their matches. The Hug number one singles player was a great player who was challenging to beat.
The Miner girls tennis have almost never lost to Douglas. It was a big shock to the team. It was crushing because they had been working so hard and now they have a less chance of going to state this year.
Due to the loss from Douglas the girls team went out to Hug to give it their all, and they were determined not to lose. Losing to Douglas last Thursday, August 10th, forced the team to change their mindsets and have a positive attitude. Instead of letting the previous match get to their heads the girls team forgot about it and went to give it their all.
The match was an away game so the girls got out of school early to travel to Hug. During warm ups we all huddled up and the coach gave us a pep talk. He said, “ Listen I know you are all disappointed about Douglas, but that is in the past. Forget about it, put in the effort, and smiles win!” That all encouraged us all and gave us the confidence to play our best game.
Throughout the match the singles and doubles players played with integrity, strength and with competitiveness. The Hug team wasn’t as strong as most of the other teams we have played in the past so we weren’t too worried about losing. Nevertheless, we still treated the game as a hard match and made sure to not slack off or think we are above them.
The victory against Hug reminded the team that one loss won’t decide your fate for the rest of the season. Regardless of the loss to Douglas the girls team is still an incredible team with spirit and athleticism.
The Girls Tennis team is looking forward to their next upcoming match to Spanish Spring which might be a challenge. The team will work on finishing with a strong season and hopefully make it to regionals.
