The Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Ceremony on June 4th and 5th has marked the transition from childhood to adulthood for Bishop Manogue students, continuing the tradition that has united graduating seniors for generations. These two events symbolize more than just the end of high school; they represent reflection, gratitude, and the beginning of a new chapter.
For many years, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School has hosted a Baccalaureate Mass for all seniors the night before graduation at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Seniors and their families gather together one final time as a class to celebrate their accomplishments and recognize how far they have come since freshman year. While graduation day is filled with excitement, applause, and celebration, the Baccalaureate Mass offers students a quieter moment to reflect on the journey that brought them there.
Over the course of four years, students at Bishop Manogue experience academic challenges, athletic competitions, school traditions, retreats, and friendships that shape who they become. The Baccalaureate Mass allows seniors to pause and appreciate those experiences with the presence of the Holy Spirit. As described by Mrs. Cope, the Mass “recognizes generational aspects of school and carries forward gifts during the ceremony”. Sitting beside classmates they have grown up with, students are reminded of the memories that connected them throughout high school. For many seniors, the Mass becomes emotional as they realize that this is the last time before graduation that their class will all be together in the same room.
The ceremony also highlights the role faith has played throughout students’ time at Bishop Manogue. Through prayer and reflection, seniors are encouraged to look toward the future with confidence and to have the courage to ask for guidance when they are lost. The Mass serves as both a celebration of achievement and a reminder of the values students will carry with them beyond graduation.
The following day, at 7 pm, the Commencement Ceremony transforms the reflective atmosphere of the Mass into one of celebration and accomplishment. Wearing caps and gowns, seniors walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, officially completing their high school careers. For many students, the moment feels surreal. Years of hard work, late nights, friendships, and memories are suddenly reduced to a single walk across the stage. Yet that moment represents everything they have achieved.
Along with receiving their diplomas, the seniors are presented with a slideshow, featuring pictures and memories from their years of high school. The slideshow reminds students of how quickly time has passed and how much they have changed since entering Bishop Manogue as freshmen. As they look back on the experiences, friendships, and milestones that shaped their high school journey, seniors are able to appreciate their personal growth while also looking forward to creating new memories in the future.
Together, the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Ceremony create a meaningful transition between high school and adulthood. One event encourages reflection on the past, while the other celebrates the future ahead. As the Class of 2026 says goodbye to Bishop Manogue, students leave not only with diplomas but also with the lessons, friendships, experiences, and values that will continue to guide them long after graduation day.
