Spamalot. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and believe me, I was thinking the same thing. A musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail named after a weird canned meat? What could be so good about that? Well, I’m about to tell you. Act I starts with being introduced to England, the land of King Arthur. We venture off to Finland with the hilarious “Fisch Slapping Dance” with our favorite Finnish Mayor After realizing this musical is not about Finland, we finally meet His Majesty King Arthur, and his best friend Patsy. Him and his Knights of the Round Table are put on a quest by God to find the Holy Grail. The stage is set with a very well-crafted castle and some amazing curtains (Shoutout Stage Crew!). “An awe inspiring production of a classic piece. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I know the other theater goers love it as well.” says a student. The Lady of the Lake and her Laker girls steal the show with songs like “Lady of the Lake” and “A Song That Goes Like This” The acting throughout the musical is stellar, with even the mess ups looking good.
Moving on to Act II, I did notice some minor mic problems and a little bit of talking backstage, but what can you expect from a bunch of high school thespians. King Arthur stumbles upon the Knights of Ni, the guardians of The Very Expensive Forest. They are sent to find a shrubbery and the Knights go their separate ways. Brave Sir Robin finds his groove in the safety of Broadway, Sir Lancelot tries to save Prince Herbert, even though he really saves his Father, and Sir Galahad and Sir Bedevere help King Arthur realize he isn’t as alone as he thought. The Knights of the Round Table come together, and with a little help from God and a peasant named Guiliano, find the Holy Grail. Just like any other Broadway musical, we end with a whirlwind wedding.
This musical was very well put together, absolutely hilarious, and sounded fantastic. The actors were really into their characters, and as someone who is friends with a lot of the cast, I am extremely proud of them. They acted great, sounded great, and looked great. Make sure you go see this musical while you still have time! The next show dates are March 15th and 16th at 7:00 p.m. and March 17th at 2:00 p.m.
