Prom just happened, and it went really well, but students are now wondering if prom is going to continue to be at the same location every year. For the past three years prom has been held at Whitney Peak Hotel.
The Bishop Manogue Catholic High School prom took place on May 2 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., bringing together juniors and seniors for an evening themed “Rio de Janeiro Carnival.” Even though the night itself was super fun, a lot of students are now talking about whether the venue should stay the same or if it is time for a change.
For the past three years, prom has been held at Whitney Peak Hotel in downtown Reno. It is honestly a really nice venue and most students agree on that. The lighting, the setup, and the overall vibe of the ballroom all work really well for prom. It also makes things easy because it is in a central location and everyone kind of already knows where to go. But because it is been used multiple years in a row, some students feel like it is starting to feel repetitive. Instead of walking into something new and exciting each year, people already know what to expect when they show up.
“I love the venue, but I think it is starting to become too comfortable,” Bishop Manogue Senior, Grace Basta said. “I think that they should switch the venue every other year, so no one goes to the same location two years in a row. When I went this year, I knew exactly what it was going to look like because it was in the exact same place as last year. I just think changing it would make it more exciting,” Bishop Manogue Senior, Ava Zupon.
At the same time, there are students who think keeping Whitney Peak is actually a good idea. From a planning standpoint, it’s reliable, it fits a lot of people, and it’s already known to work for our school. Teachers and staff also know the space well, which probably makes organizing the event easier behind the scenes. It’s also in downtown Reno, which makes transportation easier compared to other possible locations.
Still, the students who want a change feel like prom is supposed to feel like a once in a lifetime kind of night. For them, part of what makes prom special is not knowing exactly what to expect when you walk in. They think switching venues every so often could bring back that feeling of excitement and make each year feel more unique instead of repetitive.
Looking ahead, it is not clear if Bishop Manogue will continue using Whitney Peak Hotel or consider switching venues in the future. Right now, it seems like the school has a decision to make between keeping a tradition that works well or changing things up to keep prom feeling fresh and exciting for future classes. Either way, prom continues to be one of the biggest and most talked about events of the year for students.
